Make the return to what matters.
No two coaching journeys look exactly alike. Some begin with ongoing one-on-one coaching. Others deepen through immersive experiences in the wilderness.
Every engagement is built around the same philosophy: creating the awareness, perspective, and experiences that lead to lasting transformation — not just temporary inspiration.
About Our Work
[ who we're for ]For leaders, founders, families, and individuals who are ready to step away from the noise and reconnect with what matters most.
You don't need to have everything figured out. You don’t need experience. You only need to be willing.
[ immersive experiences ]The work isn't about escaping life. It's about returning to it differently.
A High Terrain Immersion combines coaching, personal experiences, horses, wilderness, preparation, and integration into one intentional process.
Because transformation isn't something we chase. It's something we learn to carry home.
[ OUR COACHING PROCESS ]The High Terrain Methodology
Every High Terrain experience is built on the same foundation. Through private coaching, immersive experiences, or time on the land, our methodology creates the conditions for lasting transformation by combining intentional practice with lived experience.
Rather than offering quick answers or temporary motivation, we guide people through a process of greater awareness, meaningful challenge, honest reflection, and lasting integration — helping them return to everyday life with greater clarity, presence, and purpose.
[ level one ]PRESENCE
Everything begins with awareness.
Before meaningful change can happen, we must first slow down enough to notice how we're showing up — to ourselves, to others, and to the environments we're navigating. Presence creates the foundation for honest observation, deeper connection, and intentional leadership.
[ level TWO ]PRACTICE
Awareness grows through action.
New ways of thinking are strengthened through experience, not theory alone. Whether in conversation, with horses, in the wilderness, or through meaningful challenge, practice develops the habits, resilience, and confidence that create lasting change.
[ level three ]REFLECTION
Experience becomes wisdom through reflection.
Growth requires more than simply moving from one challenge to the next. Reflection creates space to process what was learned, uncover patterns, ask better questions, and recognize the lessons that might otherwise be missed.
[ level FOUR ]INTEGRATION
The work isn't complete when the experience ends.
Transformation is measured by how we return to our families, our work, our leadership, and our everyday lives. Integration bridges the gap between meaningful experiences and lasting change, ensuring the lessons continue long after the journey home.
[ commonly asked questions ]Preparing for your Immersion
Preparing for an immersive experience often comes with questions. We've gathered answers to the most common ones to help you arrive informed, confident, and ready for the work ahead.
-
Every High Terrain immersion is unique because every landscape, season, group, and individual brings something different to the experience. While no two immersions follow the exact same rhythm, each is intentionally designed around coaching, meaningful challenge, reflection, and time on the land. In the months leading up to your experience, we'll prepare you with coaching conversations, a packing list, and everything you need to arrive ready to fully engage with the work.
-
Not at all. High Terrain welcomes participants with a wide range of outdoor backgrounds. Whether this is your first time spending meaningful time in the wilderness or you've spent years outdoors, every experience is designed to meet you where you are. We'll provide guidance before your arrival so you feel prepared and confident.
-
Once you're registered, we'll provide a detailed packing list tailored to your specific immersion, the season, and the environment. We'll also discuss any specialty gear that may be needed during your pre-experience coaching calls.
-
Each immersion varies depending on the location and activities involved. Some experiences include hiking, working with horses, or extended time outdoors, while others are less physically demanding. We'll communicate the expected activity level beforehand so you know what to expect and can prepare accordingly.
-
Not in the traditional sense. High Terrain immersions combine coaching, experiential learning, and meaningful challenge to create lasting transformation. Rather than stepping away simply to relax, participants engage in experiences that cultivate greater awareness, stronger relationships, and a deeper understanding of themselves.
-
Each immersion includes your coaching experience before and after the event, lodging, meals (unless otherwise noted), and all scheduled activities. Because every immersion is unique, you'll receive a detailed itinerary outlining exactly what's included before your arrival.
-
Our immersions are designed for leaders, business owners, first responders, military members, couples, families, and individuals navigating seasons of growth or transition. You don't need to fit a particular title or background — you simply need to be willing to engage honestly with yourself and the experience.
-
Many participants have little or no prior experience with horses. If your immersion includes horses, you'll receive instruction and guidance throughout the experience. The focus isn't horsemanship—it's learning through relationship, awareness, and presence.
-
Transformation isn't measured by what happens during an immersion—it's measured by how you return home. Every High Terrain experience includes intentional integration so you can reflect on what you've learned, apply it to everyday life, and continue building on the work long after you've left the field.
-
Many High Terrain experiences are designed specifically for individuals, couples, families, or organizational teams. If you're interested in attending with others, we'll help you determine which experience is the best fit for your goals.
-
Absolutely. We believe the curiosity, courage, and perspective of youth have much to teach us, and we're honored to create experiences that strengthen relationships across generations. Whether you're hoping to create a meaningful experience together or explore an immersion designed specifically for your child, we'd love to help you find the right fit.
Transformation is uncomfortable.
[ darin, on coaching with clarity ]It carries a cost. Most people change when they finally realize the discomfort of growth is less expensive than the pain of staying the same. Clarity doesn’t mean you feel good. It means you understand what the discomfort is doing.
The mountain doesn’t care about your excuses, but it will reward your honesty. The horse doesn’t respond to your story - it responds to your congruence.
So I coach people to stop treating discomfort like an enemy and start treating it like instruction.
Not every hard thing is a warning. Sometimes it’s an initiation.
[ origins ]What is Level 7?
Level 7 refers to a state of clarity and integration that comes from experience. It’s often described as transcendence - not as something abstract, but as the ability to remain present, aware, and effective under pressure. It represents the highest level in a progression, where understanding is no longer theoretical, but lived.
